I remember the time

When my friend told me that

He’d be the hero

Because he’s white and

I’d have to become the villain

Because I’m black.

I look pretty good today but

The people out there just don’t

Appreciate being natural and

I think about it

Every time I look into the mirror.

Make up looks fake

On my face and people often laugh

At me and they tell me to

Turn around and never return.

You just say that being dark

Is natural and okay but deep inside

You’re thanking God for not

Creating you, like me.

External beauty and fairness are

So important in the real world

That people are ready to lose

Their true self and they wouldn’t

Mind talking about it.

Don’t be afraid of the dark

For nobody can see you in it

You can always blend in

When you feel the threat around

You needn’t run

For you are a perfect camouflage.

Most of the heroes are white and

All of them are busy with the

“We’d like to thank those

Fairness creams, without which

Our lives would be miserable.”

Get seven shades fairer skin.

It’s the same concept

All over again

But we always tend to fall into it.

We want something more out of

Ourselves. Don’t we?

We’re never satisfied with what we

The picture filters are the best

Inventions after the phone.

Just remember that

Slogans don’t work unless

We follow them.

Who takes the blame for being racist?

I won’t

Because someone else did it first.

“It all happened in a dream.”

A lame excuse.

  1. Black, white, fat, thin bla bla bla…people are never satisfied with themselves as well as with others…who knows this better than me…just to adjust with the world i first tried changing myself and then lost all my confidence…
Thats not the case anymore, thank god, I understood the value of being a true person ๐Ÿ˜Š

  2. This was a multidimensional poem on so many levels. First, it deals with insecurities innocent kids are forged with when young. Secondly, the portrayal of the good & bad guy based on color in the filming industries. Thirdly, the commercials that apparently want to extinguish a certain color with the help of creams just because it’s different. Now that’s what’s causing all the problem. We’re all different, be it color or personality. We’re incomparable. The good guy can be black & the bad guy can be white. You can be whoever you want to be. Influential people have a way of distorting differences & misguiding the public that follow them like sheep. The last thing we ought to remember that being proud of our differences actually makes a real difference.

Thanks for putting this out here so impeccably, it’s an important message to share with the world.

  3. Well Batman’s Cape is black. Daredevil’s original costume is also black. Most superhero’s fight in the dark and live in the dark to shine light on others. Black is one of the colours you can never look bad in. So from where I see it, it’s cool.

All white people are just jealous.

    1. I agree. Black is a colour that I like the most. I like the colour white as well but here, it’s about the differences that we see amogst people who value other people based on their colour.
Thank you for sharing your views here. I’m glad that you went through the post.

    1. Yeah. It’s hard to digest the fact that we still live in a world where people are put down just because of their physical appearance. This was an attempt to tell that the colour of a person shouldn’t be considered as we’re all humans at the end of the day and we all are of equal values. Thank you so much for stopping by.

      1. Yes I understood what you were doing. I have known and experienced a lot of this here in . And the skin whitening thing – it is just heartrending. It breaks my heart but ai did not realuse that people still feel they have to do that un order to be accepted. Many of my friends are black, and they have told me what they feel. I am with them one hundred percent. But you are so right about equality. And you know, for me personally, I am not accepted because I am blind and in a wheelchair. My hysband is also in a wheekchair, but because we are like this, we are treated as if we are not people. We are treated horribly, and unmystly. We are not the oretty ones, the fit ones, the beautiful ines. And so this hits at all levels of life. It is si very very sad Pavan. I am glad that you wrote this. Thankyou

      2. It’s sad to hear that people behave in such a bad manner. I feel really sorry for your condition too. I hope that you and your husband are living a stable life. Beauty comes from within. That’s what I’ve learnt. We’re all beautiful. Thank you so much for talking to me, Mrs. blindzanygirl. It’s great to hear from you.

      3. And itโ€™s great to read your brilliant poetry too. And I agree about beauty. We are fine thankyou. Just sad that society is as it is, not just for ourselves, but for everyone whom others treat unjustly. Please keep writing your brilliant poetry.

  4. Like I said over there. Plain. Raw and simple and exquisite. It’s a sad reality that the world we’re born in had already designated meanings to every colour. White stood for peace. Black became evil.
Life’s about finding people who are patient enough to look beyond external looks.
    Amazing poem again! ๐Ÿ™‚

  5. Hello Pavan Your poem hit things on the head. We are created equal in the eyes of God so why can’t we all just accept each other for who we are. Skin color does not mean anything it is what is inside as you said that counts us equal. Thanks for sharing such a valid topic in today’s society where racism is still present which is wrong in all ways. Keep writing such powerful poems filled with hope and desire fro human beings to get along as equals.

      1. Thank you for posting about this important topic in our world. Yes, we are all equal irrespective of our color. Keep writing about such topics that effect us all Pavan !!

    1. You’re right! It’s high time and we have to accept the reality. We’re humans in the first place and we should respect one another irrespective of their colour or any other quality they possess.
